New exhibition and programme of events:  ‘War and the Washburn Valley’

Our new exhibition and events programme launch on Friday 5 October. Please pick up a leaflet and view the exhibition in our weekend tea room.

In commemoration and celebration of the end of the First World War on 11th November 1918 our exhibition and theme from October 2018 to January 2019 looks at aspects of both world wars and other related topics, both serious and light hearted.

The exhibition in the Centre focuses on men from the Washburn valley whose names are recorded on the war memorial in Fewston churchyard.  For each of the eleven men who died in the First World War and the four men who died in the Second World War, a panel will tell the story of their birth, life and death.

The programme of events includes talks, suppers, visits, walks and workshops as well as a whist drive such as was held regularly in Fewston during the war to raise money for comforts for the troops.  Highlights include a coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, a showing of films featuring local people and their memories of wartime, and a wartime supper and singalong.
