The Vicar

The Revd Graham Shield is the Vicar of Washburn and Mid-Wharfe United Benefice, including Fewston and Blubberhouses churches.

Soon after joining the Benefice in 2013 Graham fulfilled a long-held ambition of seeing where he works from the air. His 50th birthday present from his daughter Clare was a helicopter ride that covered Otley Chevin, Harrogate, Blubberhouses, Menwith Hill, Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs.  Graham said, "It's something I've wanted to do since my previous post in St Mawgan in Cornwall, where I nearly got a trip with the RAF."It was a wonderful 20 minutes. For some of the time we followed the River Wharfe and had lovely views looking east, and once we’d turn for home at Blubberhouses Church I could pick out the church towers in Fewston, Leathley and Farnley. I told the congregations to look out for me, and I'm sure it will provide some inspiration for sermons in the future - although I don't think I can claim I had a God's-eye view of things."

Graham lives with his wife Julie at The Rectory, Stainburn Lane, Leathley, Otley LS21 2LF.  He can be contacted by phone 0113 203 7754 or email
